My Accent Can Get Me Into Trouble

August 1997
Nev's friend Evren and his fiance Hülya were visiting from Canada.  Hülya had made a yogurt cucumber drink called cacık (pronounced juh-jik) that Nev really loves.  When I asked Hülya how to make cacık, she looked at me like how could you ask me that.  Then she said something in Turkish and Nev answered something back and they all started laughing.  Nev explained that Hülya thought that I had said çocuk (pronounced cho-jook) which means child.
